Inga Dalrymple

Inga lives and works on Gadigal land, Sydney, Australia. Inga’s work uses formalist elements - colour, line, composition- to capture fleeting impressions and memories of her surroundings to create layered surfaces. She seeks theephemeral nuances of a line or a colour, imperceptible under scumbled, scraped or scratched layers of paint to createinteresting jumping off points for new imagery. Inga is interested in how a picture can start as one thing, an idea froma memory and end up as something completely unexpected. Perceiving the physical world with curiosity is where shealways starts, collecting observations – the way a shadow falls along a wall, a colour combination of random objectsresting on a dusty shelf, she notes these down to recall back in the studio. Music, poetry, and unusual words alsoinform her work, anything that evokes a memory, or a sensation can provide a reason to paint. While subject mattercomes mainly from the landscape, both natural and urban, and still life, much of Inga’s work reflects an interiordialogue, a conversation with the materiality of paint, what it can do, how it can be extended or pushed to saysomething surprising, a flourish, layer, line or colour that informs her next move.
