Jean-Philippe Lagouarde lives and works in Paris.
From the confined space of his studio, he creates unique pieces of an unpredictable nature.
Using a box cutter, he slices thousands of thin strips of dyed blotting paper and adheres them contiguously on a frame.
This slow, precise, and repetitive process produces random results with endless variations.
Lagouarde approaches his work without a specific result in mind, following a blind process.
His only intention is to create an interaction within and from the medium.
It is, above all, a work about imperfection that the artist seeks by inviting in the unknown, even up to his choice of colors and their potential instability.
Through this approach, Lagouarde stands in a situation to observe a tangible rhythm, a random evolution of reality.
Gradually, while slicing paper, he discovers the outcome of his creative process.
“At a certain point, as I focus intensely, a void settles in, allowing clear thought to emerge.
Previously chaotic ideas begin to organize themselves.
In that moment, everything aligns, forming a cohesive whole.”
Only then can he find a glimmer of clarity, a moment of coherence, a clear line.
“When I slice paper, I don’t see myself slicing; I see myself walking,
climbing the side of a mountain, searching for the horizon,” he explains.
In a world of overstimulation, saturated with constant connections and contradictory ideas, Lagouarde’s work offers a distinct perspective, an interpretation of a personal journey.
It embodies a quest for serenity and coherence amidst chaos, addressing the universal need to make sense of it all.
